Having Fun at Easter

Happy Easter to all who celebrate!

I had a lot of fun in the kitchen this year puttering around and making things as the spirit moved me. I had successes and failures but it felt like I was right where I was supposed to be.

Since we moved to Seattle, our Easter dinners are tiny. Just the 3 of us and lots of time on the phone. But curbing my Easter falderal just because I'm not hosting a dinner for 10, doesn't really feel like me, so I don't. I make a lot of food with special dishes, even though only three of us are eating.

I make different things each year and this year I decided to try out my new chocolate rabbit mold (results above). He's great! I learned a bit about how to fill the mold so that the 2 sides fit together better, but it worked well enough for my little display.

Last week I made rainbow layered Jell-O. I baked shortbread bunny-on-a-stick cookies. I baked individual egg-shaped cakes covered in poured fondant (Loved it, btw. Why have I not been making poured fondant??) and I froze little lemon pear bunnies for the side of the salad. It was great.
Dan loves my own private Spring Baking Championship too because every night this week he's been able to eat a bunny shortbread cookie while we watched tv.

Celebrating is what you make it. Baking should be whatever makes sense to you and Cute is forever.

Easter: Decorate your own Robin Eggs

This is my kind of Easter activity. This year Hershey introduced a "Decorate Your Own Eggs" kit with Whopper malted milk eggs and food coloring markers. What fun! I found this kit at a CVS.

The pens come in green, blue and yellow ink. The eggs are large enough to hang onto easily while you decorate. Don't miss my Michigan State Spartan egg! Go Green! and Happy Easter!

Spending Easter with my Peeps: Color and Sugar Rules

I love color so much that I can see this photo of the Peeps display at Target as a poster. Wouldn't this add a little sunshine to a college dorm room? One day I was talking with another baker and told her that I was driven by color and sugar. She replied, "Me too! Color, sugar and glitter!"

It is Easter week and I just love how the Peeps brand has embraced the fun of color and sugar. Have you seen a display like this? Bravo.

Have fun making your family Easter baskets!

Bunnies on Parade

Happy Easter!  I found some bunnies on parade at Payard Patisserie in Las Vegas and I've been saving this picture to show you on Easter morning.  I hope the Easter bunny has filled your basket with sweet treasures.  Enjoy!

Easter Candy

When I was growing up, my grandmother kept a lidded glass dish on her sideboard. When we dropped in for a visit, we would always find it filled with Hershey kisses.

Around Easter, she filled it with their pastel foiled-wrapped chocolate eggs. I always left with a pocketful of foil wrappings and as an adult, I realize (with so many of us dropping in) she must have refilled that dish daily!

I have my own little candy dish on the piano in the living room. I keep it filled with peanut M&Ms and it was only recently that I realized my nieces & nephews enter & exit the kitchen via the dining room door. It is the most direct route to the candy, you see.

When I saw this display, I decided to go a little overboard. Today I am going to fill an apothecary jar with Easter goodies. If I don't, who will?

Easter Bunnies

I can't resist having an Easter basket in the kitchen - a pretty little display for guests to nibble from. Can you see my porcelain bunnies? Put an apron on a mother bunny and I am a goner. I found them years ago (for $1 each!) at Cost Plus World Market. I was hosting the family for Easter that year and I put a mother or father bunny at every place setting. It looked so cute and was a wonderful "party favor." Considering the number of people in each family, each household got at least 4 bunnies to take home. I like knowing that they would bring Easter cheer for years to come.

Bunny Lovey

Are you planning on having a beautiful Easter basket this year?

I wanted to show you a new item that is beautiful and interesting.
Edible Easter grass.

I found it at Walmart in a magnificent display of color-coded candy. A section of candy that is all pink. All peach. All blue. It is just gorgeous. Among the choices is edible Easter grass from Germany. I bought a bag of pink (strawberry) and took this photograph before gifting the Garden Club girls an Easter basket of treats.

Edible Easter grass...now who could resist nibbling this sweet treat?
